whitespace in revision ids

I've just realised that we have considerable code that assumes there are
no whitespace minimally ( \r\n\t) characters in revision ids.
I don't see any value in whitespace in revision ids (unlike non-ascii
characters which are useful for representing uids) and quite a bit of
potential for confusion.
Can we make them explicitly banned ?
