bzr speed

Two days back I did a 'bzr branch' on the main bzr.dev branch. I was
on a reasonably fast cable line, and it took *more than one hour* for
the operation to finish.

The equivalent operation on mercurial's main brach ('hg clone') took
around 1 minute.

Is this is a known problem? Being worked on? I'm personally biased in
favor of bzr, but I really like mercurial as well. At the very least,
I'd love to bzr being as fast as mercurial (I'm not that worried about
functionality, I think both already do more than what I need).
