Actually, .lnk files are worse from my POV, because they have the wrong
name.  One of the reasons for having placeholders was to make the
symlink's filename unavailable.

Using .lnk would mean that "foo" was an available filename, "foo" was
versioned as a symlink (and present), and "foo.lnk" was unavailable.
Which doesn't seem very useful, especially given that you can't treat a
.lnk file as a symlink for file operations.

Though AIUI, Windows Vista will have symlinks.  Then it just needs POSIX
 file modes...

BTW, the reason I bring this up is because I've been doing tests on
symlinks in Tree Transform, and it reminded me of the issue.  Plus I
wanted to get it out of my head onto the wiki, so I can free up the
resources for, say, Homestar Runner.
