I do because a large set of people seem to want it. I think they are
sucky, and I only want to support it if we can do it without crippling
the library api - so it should be considered very very carefully. But I
think it is doable in a tasteful way.

BTW, John's version-info plugin is almost a replacement, if it listed
all the files last-modified revisions, and 'uncommitted' for those files
that are changed, then it could be used to build a 'version.c' or some
such that reflects the status of the project.
