No, I'm disagreeing with the approach.
My goal is to fuse

I think apply_changeset_to_inventory is more complicated than is needed
to do what it does. I don't see a justification for doing it that way.
We already have a mechanism to apply metadata changes. We should use
that, unless there's some compelling reason why we can't.
