I would like to add that, just in case someone makes this suggestion, a
check for $DISPLAY is not desirable either to ‘automagically’ detect the
presence of a graphical environment. Many hosts I connect to have X
Forwarding setup (so that $DISPLAY is available), but in most cases I still
want to use the terminal.
