I've been inspired to hack up a branch-history command (I'd call it
'ancestry', but we already have a command with that name). It's in the
latest bzrtools:
http://panoramicfeedback.com/opensource/bzr/bzrtools

The output for bzr.dev looks like this:

~/bzr.dev$ bzr branch-history
Martin Pool <mbp at sourcefrog.net>
  1 .. 1189
Robert Collins <robertc at robertcollins.net>
  1190 .. 1224
Martin Pool <mbp at sourcefrog.net>
  1225
Robert Collins <robertc at robertcollins.net>
  1226 .. 1227
Martin Pool <mbp at sourcefrog.net> / bzr.dev
  1228 .. 1443
Martin Pool <mbp at sourcefrog.net> / merge-recovered
  1444
Martin Pool <mbp at sourcefrog.net> / bzr.dev
  1445 .. 1453

It's meant to follow the revision history, and in particular, to
identify branch points. So it doesn't indicate merges in any way.

Of course, this doesn't help Belmar-Letelier's use case, but our
auto-parent tracking does.
