Extra revisions in a branch (was Re: How to get the diff between two arbitrary remote revisions?)

diff inserts history into the local branch?

I think keeping the data after an aborted merge or uncommit is
reasonable, but I'm surprised that diff would do this. 

Or does it just say "fetching revisions" and it's only bringing them
into memory?
