Subversion's notation is a bit cryptic, but it is mostly due to it's reuse of
the same characters in different columns to mean different things. And
because it shows many things in status, that bzr does not.

On the other hand, there are problems with spelling out full words:

added foo.c
modified foo.h
added bar.c
modified foo.h

is rather unreadable. At least, the file names need to be aligned:

added foo.c
modified foo.h
added bar.c
modified bar.h

Now someone's inevitably going to come with request to localize those names:

přidán foo.c
změněn foo.h
přidán bar.c
změněn bar.h

and you have to keep track of how long the strings are this time. And scripts
have to make sure they turn localization off so they are able to parse.

And besides, I don't think it's more readable than simple:

A foo.c
M foo.h
A bar.c
M bar.h

Just keep the number of states and flags down to a reasonable level (and
choose letters that are distinguishable -- not like subversion's G and
C during update).
