Certainly, there's no compelling reason right now.

I was just chiming in so you fine guys can prevent the "all file names
are unicode" assumption from getting too deeply ingrained thorough the
code base.

Unchecked assumptions tend to do that to your code, and one day you turn
around and find out you have no pants.
