I use same setup everywhere: 10+ bashrc setup files and libraries with:

  Debian
  Cygwin
  Redhat
  SunOs

which are at spread inside 20 different workstations at discrete
locations. When I report bug under Debian the EDITOR is set to my
Emacs + all the setup I need make it comfortable (takes a while to
start). But when I commit with CVS tools, I want fast editor, like
jmacs (a jed symlink).

Let's just conclude, that one simple EDITOR is not good for every
task at hand.
