Possibly I wasn't thinking straight last night, but I missed an obvious
answer to this one: implement revfile access with a local cache.
Download everything since the last full copy (they happen every 25
revisions or so) and satisfy subsequent requests from that.  Much better
than the latency of hitting the server for each diff.
