I'm going to pull a John here and reply to myself with a better  
patch.  This one adds a tiny bit of documentation about -r for diff,  
and makes it work the way it's described in commands.py:

no -r = last checkout -> working tree
-r N (or) -r N: = rev N -> working tree
-r :N = rev 0 -> rev N
-r M:N = rev M -> rev N
