There is no integer[*] that universally describes the file version.
However, we can give the last-change author, the last-change date, and
the file id or revision id which looks like this:

  mbp at sourcefrog.net-20050309073300-d270e9d0058727b9

Most of ddaa's arguments apply against CVS as well, and indeed some
people don't use keywords in CVS for that reason, but other people like
them.

PRCS apparently a good implemntation of this.
