although the tool is still pretty experimental you could try to use
'arb-lint' instead of lintian. It's very new but tries to check packages
for extras for known problems.

To run it, to the following:

 sudo apt-get install ppa:dholbach/ppa
 sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install arb-lint
 cd your-source-tree
debuild -us -uc (to build the package)
arb-lint (to get some output about what might be wrong)

As I said before the tool is very new, very likely has bugs, but I hope
it's useful to you.

Let me know how things go. :-)

Have a great day,
 Daniel
