This issue can be considered closed/resolved. It appears the user's
session state simply needed to be updated/made aware of the change.
Follow these steps for polypaudio bliss (disregard the ones above):
1) System>Preferences>Sound: uncheck (disable) the option "Enable sound
server startup"
2) click Close
3) System>Log Out: check (enable) the option "Save current setup"
4) click Ok
5) log back in
6) repeat step [1], only this time check (enable) the option "Enable
sound server startup"
7) click Close
Sound with Polypaudio now works. Test with System>Preferences>Multimedia
Systems Selector>Audio>Default Sink>ESD>Test .
