The VMWare player is proprietary software, that's the problem. I see two
problems providing images: proprietary software is needed to use them,
so Ubuntu would be encouraging the use of non-free software. That goes
against the Ubuntu manifesto.

I was afraid that this would turn out to be a problem...
I was thinking about using VMWare to test higher level stuff such as
package testing, upgrading, etc. It's a good way to make some exercises
- for example, we can simulate a migration from Breezy to Dapper,
loading all the packages, and checking what gets broken or not, inside
a virtual environment. For this purpose some pre-built Breezy (or even
Hoary) images could be made available, containing combinations of
packages for testing alone.
Another interesting possibility is to use the native networking layer
of VMWare to test the image. Sets of networking tests can be written,
using some specific tool, and run against the virtual image, all using
a single computer. The test system can be a virtual image too. Of
course, in this case we would need a big machine (with lots of memory)
to run the test into, but the convenience and the ability to repeat the
test from scratch as many times as needed are great time savers in the
long run.

--
Carlos Ribeiro
Consultoria em Projetos
blog: http://rascunhosrotos.blogspot.com
blog:
