I'll throw in my two cents. :o) Personally I like the illustrations, particularly the mask in this wallpaper: <a href="http://art.ubuntu.com/backgrounds/ubuntu/26"> http://art.ubuntu.com/backgrounds/ubuntu/26</a> *but* (there's always a but, right?), my own feeling is that they may be too complicated and/or culturally specific to be used as the defaults for the distro. That's just my own opinion though, so if others feel differently about them, let us know. One thing to look forward to (at least I'm looking forward to it) is the future of the "gnome-art" app tied in with <a href="http://art.ubuntu.com"> art.ubuntu.com</a> and possibly part of a default Ubuntu desktop install. That will be the next best thing to having one's artwork directly in the distro, as people will be able to browse and install AUC (<a href="http://art.ubuntu.com"> art.ubuntu.com</a>) artwork with just a few clicks of the mouse. Another suggestion I would make to you Nikolai, would be to release SVG versions of your wallpapers. In Inkscape, just leave everything as-is, but delete the background - making it transparent. That way, people that like your illustrations but not your color schemes could choose whatever background colors they want, and your graphics would sit on top of that. If they were to be submitted as wallpapers for potential use directly in Ubuntu, they would need to be licensed in a specific way, but for the life of me I can't find the link that explains all that right now. Actually, JPG (with as little compression and artifacts as possible) is probably the best option for straight photos. If the Ubuntu logo appears on the images though, PNG is the best bet as you won't get the typical JPG blotchy artifacts in the in the logo. With high resolution images though, you may need to do some experimentation. A JPG with little compression may end up with a significantly smaller file size than any kind of PNG. >    * Is the Ubuntu Logo mandatory on all pics ? Hmm.... The issue hasn't come up before, so it may require some discussion here. On one hand I'd like to see some nice photography done by an Ubuntu user that is suitable for wallpaper use, but on the other hand, I don't think it's quite right that <a href="http://art.ubuntu.com"> art.ubuntu.com</a> turn into a photo gallery hosting service. Perhaps you could submit some of your favorites with the logo included, and mention in your profile page that you have more photographs for potential wallpapers hosted elsewhere. If you have a website and can do a gallery, that would be great. If not, you could use a service like <a href="http://flickr.com">flickr.com</a>. Then as you (or others, if your photos are licensed as such) make Ubuntu wallpapers out of them, they can be added to <a href="http://art.ubuntu.com">art.ubuntu.com</a>. While good photography can provide really good backgrouns, they seldom cut it if they are used "raw" - ie. with out being reworked. Simply sticking a logo on a photo won't do it in most cases either (though there may be exceptions to this ofcourse). I'm not saying that everything should be as heavily reworked as <a href="http://art.ubuntu.com/backgrounds/ubuntu/52">http://art.ubuntu.com/backgrounds/ubuntu/52</a>, but a little touching up never hurst :-D If there are photographers out there wanting to share their footage with the world they could be a great resource for the art team.
