I think there are a lot of options for window controls. Off the top of my
head, there is no need to stick to the button idea, a look like touch
sensitive surfaces could work well. Integration is an issue, many themes I
have seen seem to just tack on buttons without much care for the overall
aesthetic. Simple, smooth animations would be good too but Metacity doesn't
do that as it goes against the design philosophy.
