Local devices and samba/ldap...need help

That sounds likely.  Your users were created on edgy or dapper when that
group didn't exist.

You'll need to create a group in LDAP with the same GID as the fuse group
on the edubuntu system and join your users up to it.  Then a user should be
able to type "groups" and see fuse in there.
